Guatemala is crossed by a large chain of volcanoes. Between Mexico to the north and its southern neighbours (Honduras & El Salvador), there are no less than 300 volcanic structures, of which 37 are recognised as volcanoes. Three of them are active today.
They offer a rich playground for hikers, mountain bikers and sports enthusiasts of all kinds.
Guatemala is considered to be the best destination for observing volcanic eruptions. The spectacle of fumaroles, flows and even lava explosions create unique memories.
At 3,753 metres high, Fuego is one of the most active volcanoes in Central America. Its Indian name "Chi'gag" means "where the fire is" in Maya.
The Fuego volcano is best appreciated from the town of Antigua, or when climbing the Pacaya volcano. But the best way to enjoy the "Chi'gag" is to climb the neighbouring Acatenango volcano to enjoy the show.
Although Fuego is one of the most active volcanoes in the world, it can still experience breaks of one or two weeks during which its activity is limited.
